“WHAT 15 YEAR OLD CAN SAY THEY HAVE LED A PARADE THROUGH DISNEYLAND DOING SOMETHING AS A HOBBY?”
Finally, two Durham Army Cadets are to embark on a voyage of remembrance, adventure and personal development to mark a century-old anniversary. They will set sail on the Lord Dannatt’s Round Britain Challenge this summer. It is the ultimate nod to the armed forces and their sacrifice for their country. Cadet Corporal Jake Gregory, 16 from Hebburn and Cadet Sergeant Marc Hague, 16 from Stanley are two of 96 Army Cadets to undertake the challenge which is being staged to mark the close of the First World War later this year. Our two cadets have been selected from the entire UK Cadet Forces. Colonel Brian Kitching, Commandant Durham ACF said “this is a truly remarkable record and achievement for any ACF county, to have 9 youngsters who have won places on 4 separate expeditions all over the world is outstanding. I am sure that you will all have
an amazing adventure. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of the cadets and our adult volunteers. Our Durham ACF training year will culminate in an annual camp in Northern Ireland this summer with over 500 cadets attending from Durham County”.
Durham Army Cadets bring magic to Disneyland
The Band and Bugles of Durham Army Cadet Force has been in France, after kicking off their tour at Northern Pride, in Newcastle.
After leading the 20,000 strong crowd at Pride, the band of 35 youngsters travelled to France, where they spent time in Paris, playing in the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Chateau Grande Romaine and Disneyland, in front of more than 40,000 holiday- makers.
Cadet Lance Corporal James Watson, 15, said: “This experience has been amazing, the atmosphere was outstanding. We were nervous and excited at the same time.
“The crowd’s reaction from our display was fantastic everyone was clapping and cheering the band as we marched in the sweltering heat. What 15 year old can say they have led a parade through Disneyland doing something as a hobby?”
Major Colin Miller, director of music, said: “We returned to the UK after what can only be described as a fantastic week of performances where the Band and Bugles brought Durham Army Cadet Force to an international audience, acting in a professional manner at all times and proving to be great ambassadors for Durham ACF, they are to be commended.”
