Vairy, Terence – Late KOYLI passed away on
Wilkinson, Malcolm passed away on 29 June 18
Williams, Frederick (Fred) – Late KOYLI/Rifle Brigade passed away on 3 June 18 in his eighty-eighth year. His wife Joyce had predeceased him by three months. They had lived all their married life at Elland, and the funeral of Fred, like Joyce’s before him, was at the Parish Church of St Mary’s in the town centre. It was a lovely summer’s day as David Bloomfield and I neared the building, where we spotted Treasurer John Woods parking his car. We went on together and came in sight of the church where we could see our comrades Tom and Sue Conlin on the qui vive, alert for approaching Green Jackets of whom we were not the first, as inside the churchyard were Hugh and Julia Goudge and Ernie Blanchard. Ernie, who had taken the day off work to say farewell to our chairman had driven over to Elland from Doncaster. He has the distinction of having served in the KOYLI before joining the Green Jackets. He has remained faithful to both his regiments.
Fred was born in Oldham in 1930. At some point the family had moved to Stairland where Fred had been a member of the church choir until he was “chucked out”. He had been a scout and had joined the Army Cadet Force (Duke of Wellington’s) in which, as he so often told us he had risen to the rank of Sergeant Major.
During his National Service he had found his way into the Rifle Brigade, in which he had been a regimental policeman. He never tired of telling us anecdotes of his exploits in khaki at the time of the Berlin Airlift, where had had been employed unloading supplies during the blockade.
After demob he and Joyce, who had known one another since childhood, were married in 1952. They lived at Elland and were blessed with two children, Gwyneth and David, whose names must have been a reminder of happy holidays in Wales. In the early days of their marriage they had a tandem upon which one could safely guess who had the post of honour at the front. They eventually graduated to a motor bike and perhaps a side-car as in the manner of Wally and Nora Batty in “Last of the Summer Wine” which was filmed in nearby Holmfirth. Fred became an ambulance man and eventually retired in a leadership position. He and Joyce were members of St Mary’s Church and Fred was a verger who took his duties seriously. “He didn’t just put out the hymn books.” Perhaps reflecting on his army days, he always referred to the vicar’s prayer list for absent worshippers as “the sick, lame and lazy”. He belonged to the British Legion and was a founder member of the Yorkshire branch of the RGJ Association. He was in charge of the Legion’s poppy appeal each year. He will be much missed.
