Minutes by MARK HALL. BEM.FNVS. September 2018
Mr President Vice Presidents Fellow Trustees Ladies and Gentlemen and a special welcome to Mr Bill Hargreaves our Past President.
I know that the members will be aware of the absence of our National Secretary at Harrogate this year
Unfortunately the reason for this is due to the recent sudden death of her Father. His funeral took place today a few hours ago As a Society we send to Her and Her Family our Sincere Condolences and prayers at this sad time.
May I take this opportunity to welcome you all to this meeting the 58th Annual General Meeting of The National Vegetable Society. I wonder if many of you are aware that in two years’ time when we convene in Dundee the Society will be coming towards the end of its Diamond Anniversary year quite an achievement. This I hope will be an Anniversary to be cherished.
Over the last year I have enjoyed chairing the Trustee Meetings. There were one or two difficulties along the way but nothing that could not be sorted out given time and patience. Over the course of the year my one disappointment was that a number of Trustees resigned for varying reasons. This of course resulted in depleting some Branch representation Ours is not to reason why this took place.
Let’s hope that this will be rectified during the course of the coming year with the new officers in place .
I hope that the year about to begin will be a good one for the Society in all respects. We are about to have a new Chairperson appointed this afternoon. Along with a new Vice Chairman. I do wish the appointees well and thank them for allowing their names to go forward to the election This will enable the Society hopefully to move forward and become more stable.
With new ideas coming forward. From a younger perspective and outlook
I would like to take this opportunity if I may to thank a few people they are the unsung heroes of this Society. The National Secretary Fiona for the amount of work which she undertakes on your behalf she is so well organised. I never cease to be amazed at the amount of work she seems to get through on your behalf.
I would also like to thank Neil Hope for his dedication as Membership Secretary over many years it is a very time-consuming job, as I know only too well I did it for a number of years. He certainly
will be missed and here I wish him well on his departure. He is unable to attend to day due to rather an important occasion Daphne and him celebrate their Golden Wedding.
We are very fortunate to have a first-class treasurer in Denis Barry. He certainly keeps everyone on their toes as far as the financial side is concerned which is no bad thing.
We have a thankless job carried out by our Assistant Secretary Mark Hall namely taking the minutes of the trustee meetings and preparing the articles for the S V magazine to try to keep everyone informed of what takes place at these meetings They all work hard for the benefit of this Society and they try to make sure this Society runs as efficiently as possible.
Of course I have missed someone, here I would like to thank
our President for his help and advice given to us all on many occasions Thank you Medwyn for your continued support to all those concerned.
On a personal note I would like to thank my wife Sandra for her never ending help enabling me be to be so involved and active within this Society where in many ways it came first. There were many occasions where we were unable to go on holiday because of my varied commitments to this wonderful Society, all that is about to go now and perhaps normality will return to our lives after many years .
May I also thank you the members for all your support given to
me over many many years It is with mixed feelings and a heavy heart that I have decided to call it a day and move on into The Retired Cub within this Society. Where I will be joining many old friends .
As I have said on a number of occasions I wish I was staring at the beginning of my association with this Growing Society and not at the end. Unfortunately, health and age do have a bearing ultimately on one’s decisions much as we do not like it, one has to realise we are not here for ever. time is a precious gift as one gets older. I have loved every minute of my association with you all. I take away from here to day many happy and treasured memories.
I was very humbled and honoured to have been elected a Vice President of this magnificent Society a number of years ago, I thank you once again for this wonderful honour. I can assure you all it is something I am extremely proud off and will cherish for my remaining years.
Thank you.
Address to AGM (vice chair Grant Cathro)
