 Jersey
The Jersey DA is still setting an example to
us all and keeping very busy promoting vegetable growing on the island.
I know the island has a good horticultural past but it still sets an impressive number of events
which must take some organising - Ed
Fun carrot competition
Around 60 people have signed up for
this year’s fun carrot growing competition organised by the Jersey Association of the National Vegetable Society. This includes some 40 children.
This very encouraging response resulted from a workshop at the Royal Jersey Showground during May where Islanders were provided with identical 30 litre containers and compost.
Association member, Mark Day assisted with the sowing of the seeds, which were supplied and donated by Marshalls. He was also on hand to give advice on the care of the growing plants.
The carrots will be harvested in August with participants bringing their three best matched specimens for judging at the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural summer show.

Last year, first and second places were both claimed by children - siblings Lexi Cameron (7) and her sister Chloe (5).
The workshop also included a mammoth sale of vegetable plants and herbs, all donated by Jersey’s prison, grown by prisoners in the horticultural unit.
Some plants were also donated to local schools and charities including Jersey Mencap (which supports adults and children with learning disabilities), Overdale Hospital and the Salvation Army.
