OBITUARY
Olive Brenda Thornton
I am saddened to inform you that Brenda Thornton passed away on the 2nd April 2019, her funeral was held in Cheltenham Crematorium and was well attended by members of the Midlands Branch.
Brenda along with her husband Bill was one of the early founder members of the Midlands Branch when it was formed back in
the 1970s, her work for the Society spans four decades from the 1970s to the 00s, and has seen her in many roles over the years. She will probably be best remembered for her role as membership secretary for the Midland branch, which she did for over 20 years with all her records kept very accurately on paper and index cards by hand, that was before the days of the computer.
She was also minute secretary for the branch along with other roles, stock controller, running the 200 club and show secretary, being involved in several National championships, like Shrewsbury, Bridgemere and Malvern, she also played an important role in the Garden festivals in the 1980s and early 90s, the first one being in the Midlands at Stoke in 1986.
In 2006 she received the Society’s most prestigious award the ‘Gold medal’ for the tremendous amount of work she had done for the society, it was often said that her home was an office and storage ware house for the society. She was only the second lady to receive such an award at the time.
The Midlands branch is indebted to the early pioneering work that Brenda did, alongside her husband Bill this laid the foundations for the Midland Branch that we know today.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Bill and his family at this sad time.
