Essex DA
Since the time of writing for the last edition of the Simply Veg magazine, the NVS Essex DA has held its first three events of 2019.
The first was a talk by Mick Poultney on “Composting” on 24 February. Mick came down from the West Midlands to share his methods of composting. Some of which you can get ready in just three weeks under the right conditions! We also learnt a lot, especially about the likes and dislikes of worms!
This was followed by a talk by Simon Smith on “20 years of showing vegetables, flowers...and cakes!” on 14 April. Simon came all the way from Leicestershire to give us a thoroughly entertaining talk about his experiences of growing and showing from him starting out all the way through to his experiences in recent years.
Later on, in April, the NVS Essex DA supported the RHS’ Spring Plant Fair at Hyde Hall on the weekend of 27th and 28th April. We had lots of plants on sale again this year, from courgettes and tomatoes to kale, brussels sprouts, cavolo nero, pak choi and lettuce. We also had some thornless

blackberries, celery and peppers, all kindly grown by our members and donated to
the Plant Sale to raise funds. The weather wasn’t kind to us unfortunately, with particularly wet and windy weather on the Saturday. However, we still managed to raise some funds for the DA as well as publicise the NVS more widely to members of the public.
