Jacob, when he came upon shepherds wa-
tering their flocks, asked if they knew his fam-
ily’s kinsman, Laban. When they said they did,
he inquired as to Laban’s state.
Gen. 29:6 And he said unto them, Is he well
[shalom]? And they said, He is well (shalom):
and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with
the sheep.
The King James Version used various words to
translate shalom when Joseph’s brothers came
to his house in Egypt.
Gen. 43:26 And when Joseph came home, they
brought him the present which was in their
hand into the house, and bowed themselves to
him to the earth.
Gen. 43:27 And he asked them of their welfare
[shalom], and said, Is your father well (shalom),
the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?
Gen. 43:28 And they answered, Thy servant our
father is in good health (shalom), he is yet alive.
Jesse sent his youngest son David to inquire as
to the shalom of his older sons in Saul’s army.
1 Sam. 17:17 And Jesse said unto David his
son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this
parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to
the camp to thy brethren;
1 Sam. 17:18 And carry these ten cheeses unto
the captain of their thousand, and look how thy
brethren fare, [shalom] and take their pledge...
