Page 22 - Shalom: The Peace That Comes From Being Whole
P. 22

1 Sam. 17:20 And David rose up early in the
morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and
            took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him;
and he came to the trench, as the host was
going forth to the fight, and shouted for the
            battle.
1 Sam. 17:21 For Israel and the Philistines had
put the battle in array, army against army.
1 Sam. 17:22 And David left his carriage in
the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran
into the army, and came and saluted [sha’al
shalom, literally in Hebrew asked the peace] his
            brethren.

The ArtScrolls Stone Edition of the Tanach has
a better translation of Jesse’s request in verse
18: “Inquire after the welfare (shalom) of your
brothers.” And of David’s obedience to his fa-
ther’s request in verse 22: “When he arrived
he inquired after the welfare (peace) of his
        brothers.”
As we study, you will see there is a rich
depth of meaning to God’s definition of the
        word shalom. His Hebrew-speaking covenant
        people understood this.
