perception
I design to continually learn how best to design,
through experimentation & research
into precedents, analysis, program,
users, sustainability, emerging
technology and materials.
At the commencement of a project, I seek to
thoroughly understand the wholistic problem,
intended program and, subsequently, design
possibilities. In order to explore possible
solutions, one must gather knowledge about
related aspects of the potential design. I seek
to perceive the situation both as it was, as it is
and as it can be, to create a sense of order.
A ‘gestalt’ is a whole that is more than the sum of its
parts (Kohler, 1969). There are 5 design principles
of gestalt theory, commonly in perception and
to create visual order (see fig 1). The key is in
how one utilises these principles to form the basis
for what they intend to create. Reciprocity of
these relationships; gestalt and order, inspiration
and designer, design and user is why I begin by
seeking to understand the unique intricacies of
the project, then develop a conceptual framework
with which to create order. Knowledge is key to
ongoing evolution, as a person and as a designer.
I immerse myself in design experiences, through work,
practice, attending events & viewing exhibitions
and media about how design shapes our world. 11
