rejuvenation
I design to fulfill a personal and professional sense
of reciprocity, of giving back, of legacy, of personal
creative spirit.
There is a reciprocity in design which provides me with a sense of creative
compassion and fulfilment. How I design today, shapes how I will design in
the future. Designs of others that I experience, will shape how I design in
the future. I am shaping design while it also shapes me. Subsequently, as
I design, I embody and retranslate the essence of the designs of those
before me. Michael Weinstock (2013) calls this energy exchange; where
living forms can construct and dynamically maintain themselves by the
‘exchange of energy and materials [...] and in doing so, excrete changed
materials back into their environment’. Design is a symbiotic relationship
between form, space, order and effectiveness. In order to maintain my own
effectiveness, I follow Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of highly effective
people (1989). The most
important, in my opinion is
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw.
This habit is about looking
after the goose that lays
the golden eggs. In order
to maintain and improve
effectiveness I need to
make sure I am looking after
myself, balancing work and
play & practicing self-care.
