WORKBOOK

                             Activity: I would like you to write new sets using the elements of the set
                             A   b,a   c ,  . Note that, you have so many options when you choose elements
                             from the set A. For example, you can choose none of the elements of A or all of
                             them.

               ***Result: Every sets which are generated from the elements of the set A is called subsets of A. In
               general the definintion of subset is given below.

               SUBSET:
               ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
               ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

               In symbolically:   A ⊂ B = {xx ∈ A  x ∈ B }

               Moreover, it is also denoted by B    A or B  A (“B is a superset of A.”)

               Example 1:

                                          B

                                A .c Using the sets, A and B given on the left
                                   .a

                                   .b                    “A ………… B”   or   “B………….. A”
                                         .d

                    * Note: We will use “ ” and “  ” as a notation in this booklet.

               Equal Sets:

               ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
               ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

               Example 2:  Determine, which of two sets  A   x:x    , Z  4 x    2 ,   x:xB     , Z  x    9  and
                                                                                           2
                C   4  ,  , 3   , 2    2 , 1 , 0 , 1  are equal.
