• Eradication of Smallpox (1980): Coordinated
by WHO (a UN agency), smallpox became the
first human disease to be eradicated.
• Polio near-eradication: Massive vaccination
campaigns led by WHO and UNICEF have
brought polio cases down by over 99%.
• Humanitarian relief: The UN World Food
Programme (WFP), which won the 2020 Nobel
Peace Prize, has saved millions from famine in Boutros Boutros Ghali
crises from Ethiopia in the 1980s to Yemen and
Ukraine today.
Human Rights and Law
• Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(1948): A cornerstone document, inspiring
constitutions and laws worldwide.
• International Tribunals: The UN set up
courts for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia,
pioneering international justice and paving the
way for the International Criminal Court.
Development and Environment
• Sustainable Development Goals ( 015): Javier Pérez de Cuéllar
Adopted by all UN members, they provide
a shared framework for tackling poverty,
inequality, and climate change.
• Montreal Protocol (1987): A UN-brokered Ban Ki-moon
treaty that successfully phased out ozone-
depleting substances — one of the most
effective environmental agreements in history.
