P. 27

The French teacher at school sent this - some of our year 12s translated it from the French ‘Journal de confinement’. It made me laugh. Thought you might appreciate this - if I have missed anyone out please forward!
It is good to know that A-level French students are doing something useful with their time.
Lockdown diary
DAY 1
Wednesday 25th March. First day with the four of us at home. Sunny day - the children have been able to enjoy the garden. No news yet from the primary school teacher; I suppose they need time to get organised. Lunch on the decking, games in the afternoon; Ruth has made a chocolate cake for tea. Feels a bit like a holiday.
DAY 2
Thursday 26th March. First time mowing the lawn this year! I love the smell of freshly cut grass. Trees are budding, tulips are coming out, the first days of spring are always lovely! Football with the kids who ended up arguing, as usual. We are slowly settling into a new routine.
DAY 3
Friday 27th March. First schoolwork has arrived for Felix: division. Watch this space... Thea is doing lots of drawings for mummy and daddy. How cute!
DAY 5
Sunday 29th March: The garden is looking wonderful, it’s like Kew! Just goes to show that every cloud has a silver lining. Ruth is spending most of her time baking: we’ll have to watch our waistlines! Thea has used half our stock of A4 paper - not so good for her carbon footprint! As for teaching division, we’re really struggling...
DAY 8
Wednesday 1st April. If Felix asks me one more time about remainders, I’ll make him eat his exercise book. Thea has pushed in all the tips of her marker pens and whinges all day long. Ruth has decided to try making a Romanian cake based on chestnut puree and prunes. I’m not convinced. Time is passing slowly.
DAY 11
Saturday 4th April. I think my son might be an idiot – I’ve given up trying to teach him division. We are one week behind on the work set by his teacher. I threw up the prune cake.
Day 12
Sunday 5th April. The toolbox is spotless. I’ve arranged my spanners in size order, the hammers in ascending order of weight. I have sorted out everything that can be sorted in our house: nails, screws, drawing pins (by colour), underpants...I am starting to get blurred vision.
DAY 14
Wednesday 8th April. We are moving onto grammar. The simple past. Decency forces me to keep quiet...
