                          MARS ON EARTH

Tt will be many years before humans can safely go to Mars, but space scientists have
already begun to prepare. They've been trying to figure out what astronauts will need
for extended stays on the red planet. One research project—the Mars Desert Research
Station—is right here on Earth. The station is located in a remote! desert area in Utah in the
United States, and the crew? members experience challenges similar to those they would face
on Mars. The crew works closely with a space psychologist.? In fact, psychology, more than
aerospace engineering, may be the key to sending human crews to Mars.

So life on Mars can drive you crazy?

Sure. Think of the tight living space, the lack of privacy, and the stress of working
together every day. The crew has to be able to handle all that.

Isn’t another challenge the special suits they have to wear?

Yes, those suits have many parts and they take hours to put on! But they’re essential.*
They protect the astronauts from radiation when they go out to explore.

Don’t the astronauts start to feel claustrophobic in the research station? I wouldn't
want to work in such a small, crowded space.

Yes, after a while, it becomes very uncomfortable. In addition, the work is hard, and
the crew is under a lot of pressure to get everything done.

I guess that’s why they need a psychologist?

That’s part of the reason. The research project presents many challenges, and the

astronauts need someone to help them to deal with everything.
1 remote: far away from where most people live
2 crew: the people who work on and operate a ship or spacecraft
3 psychologist: someone who studies how the mind works
4 essential: extremely important or absolutely necessary
