Tourists who visit Cape Town, South Africa, shouldn’t miss the Cape of Good Hope. It’s a
rocky piece of land that sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. The Cape of Good Hope is a very
important place because when ships reach the cape, they have to turn east to sail around Africa.
Bartolomeu Dias was the first European explorer to discover the cape in the 15th century.
He called it the Cape of Storms because it was very stormy there. Its discovery had opened up
a trading route between Europe and Asia, so it got a new name: Cape Hope. Over the years,
many European traders stopped at the cape to buy food and supplies from the local people.
Eventually these traders built the city of Cape Town. Many ships also sank near the cape.
People told stories about The Flying Dutchman. This was a ghost ship that tried to sail around
the cape over and over again, but never succeeded.
Nowadays, the Cape of Good Hope is part of Table Mountain National] Park. You can find
many unusual plants and animals at the cape, including African penguins. You can also see
different kinds of whales in the waters around the cape.
