Shirin Neshat is a visual artist from Iran. She came from a wealthy family. She left
Iran in 1974 at age 17 to study art in Los Angeles. Neshat now lives in New York and makes
visual art, photographs, and films. Her works look at the role of women in the Islamic world.
In 2010 she was named the Artist of the Decade by the Huffington Post. Her work explores
religion, human rights, and women’s identity. Her works have been shown in many museums
across the world, including New York, Greece, and Istanbul. Neshat says that artists are there
to bring hope and become the voice of the people.
