                    14.7.  Reported  Speech:  Commands,  Advice,  and  Requests



                     Chef:  “Stir  the  soup.”          The  chef  told  me  to  stir  the  soup.
                     Friend:  “You  shouldn't  add  sugar.”   Her  friend  advised  her  not  to  add  sugar.
                     Manager:  “Can  you  help  me?”    The  manager  asked  me  to  help  her.


                      1.  Use  an  infinitive  phrase*  to  report  commands.  |  Teacher:  “Turn  off  your  phones.”
                                                                   The  teacher  told  us  to  turn  off  our  phones.

                      2.  Often  an  infinitive  phrase  is  used  to  report   Jim:  You  should  bake  a  chocolate  cake.
                        advice  or  requests  with  modals.        Jim  told  me  to  bake  a  chocolate  cake.
                                                                   Ann:  “Could  you  turn  off  the  oven?’
                                                                   Ann  asked  me  to  turn  off  the  oven.

                      3.For  negative  commands,  advice,  or  requests,  |  Joe:  “Don’t  cut  the  cake  yet.”
                        not  comes  before  the  infinitive  phrase.   Joe  told  me  not  to  cut  the  cake  yet.


                      4.Do  not  include  please  when  reporting  a   Receptionist:  “Please  wait  in  the  hallway.”
                        command  or  request.                      The  receptionist  told  us  to  wait  in  the  hallway.

                        *infinitive  phrase:  to  +  the  base  form  of  a  verb  (+  an  object)



                     4   Complete  each  sentence  with  the  correct  statement  from  the  box.  Use  reported  speech.
