QO 1 READ the conversation about robots. What amazing things will robots do in the future?
              CcDI-19

Paulo: | Wasn't Professor Lacy’s online lecture last week amazing?

Kate: I haven't watched it yet. What did he say?
Paulo: — He talked about a new generation of robots. Apparently they’II seem almost human.

Kate: That’s interesting, but why do scientists want to make them look real?
Paulo: Well, many of the new robots will do tasks for people at home. They will also be
in schools and offices. Scientists are making robots look more human so people
                                  will be comfortable around them.
Kate: Hmm. What kind of tasks are the robots going to do?

Paulo: According to Professor Lacy, they’Il cook, fold laundry, go shopping, and even
                                  babysit children.

Kate: Don’t you think the idea is a little creepy? I think a lot of people won’t want robots
                                  in their homes.
Paulo: Maybe not. But scientists are working hard so robots won’t be scary looking. These
robots are even going to be responsive to our thoughts and feelings, and they’re
                                  going to look friendly.
Kate: I still think robots that look and act like humans will make people feel
uncomfortable. And what about children? Will they develop normally if they have
                                  robots for babysitters?
Paulo: Good question. Nobody knows how robots will affect people and their
relationships, but scientists are researching those issues.

                       Kate:
Really? I want to hear more, but my class starts in five minutes. Are you going to
                                  the study session on Friday?
Paulo: — No, but I’ll e-mail you. Let’s get together soon.
