Jobs for the Future
In the future, people around the world will be facing big challenges. They will be J
dealing with a growing population, the depletion! of energy sources, pollution, and
climate change. However, there is a positive side. The search for solutions may lead to a
variety of new jobs. Here are some examples.
Vertical farmers: By 2045, the global population will have reached nine billion. Most
people will be living in cities. How will there be enough food for everyone? One possible
answer is vertical farming—or using tall buildings to grow food in urban areas. Vertical
farms will use much less space than traditional farms. Farmers will deliver food locally, so
they won't use a lot of fuel for transportation.
Floating city designers: Climate scientists predict that by mid-century, many coastal]?
people will have lost their homes due to rising sea levels. One solution may be floating
cities. These are offshore? communities of homes, offices, and recreational space. They
will protect homes from flooding and create more living space. Their main sources of
energy will be water and solar power.
Clean car engineers: In the future, more and more people will be
asking auto manufacturers to make cars that will not pollute the air
with harmful gases. Engineers will need to design cars that can run
without using fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gasoline.
In the coming years, these new jobs are going to be
growing in importance. The future of our planet very much
depends on them.
1 depletion: the reduction of something by using too much of it
2 coastal: describes things that are on land near the sea
5 offshore: located in the sea, near the coast
