Microsoft Teams – What’s Up?
We live in interesting times. Information is flooding our minds and things are changing
very fast. We can’t really rely on the good old notebook, pull-off calendar, and even
(sorry) our memory. There are, of course, many modern means of communication and
data sharing – some more and some less popular (functional, user-friendly, protected
etc.). Does anyone remember ICQ, by the way?
Microsoft Teams is just one of those modern tools, and, likely, not the worst. Why do
we use it? As you know, Fortive is moving to Microsoft cloud platform. Our e-mail is
hosted by MS, we run our documents with MS Office 365, we backup and share our
data via SharePoint and OneDrive, we hold online meetings in Skype for Business. The
‘Teams’ is just one step further. And it may, in its time, become The One place to do all
of it. Change is hard, but we live in interesting times… If we can’t stop the process – let’s
lead it.
This ‘Teams’ online platform combines workplace chat, meetings, notes, file storage and more. Within a team, members
can set up channels. Channels are like topics of conversation that allow team members (invited by an administrator) to
communicate on a chosen topic.
Here is the way we are using Teams: We have identified job functions (like certification, marketing, customer service,
technical sales, etc.) and set up channels for each. The news are shared in the channel, up-to date documents are
maintained (and may be edited online by several people at a time, if needed). Any team member can scan though relevant
channels to see – what’s new, what’s changed, to post a note or to answer a question. It is also possible to add assignments
and various apps to a channel, but here we still have room for improvement.
It’s a very sophisticated tool. And we are using just a tiny part of it. Still, when the times come – it will be easier for us to
convert what remains of our job-related digital habits. In less than a year Teams became a part of almost everyone’s
toolkit. A good and effective tool, really. Give it a try!
