TAIWAN SPCA BI-MONTHLY NEWSLETTER APRIL 2017
On the 17th and 18th of March, Taiwan SPCA went down to Changhua to give talks about Taiwan’s zero-euthanasia policy. Participant from Changhua and other cities were in attendance. On the 17th, Taiwan SPCA and Awaken Changhua Union hosted a seminar, many high school students who were interested in the topic came to listen, even though it was during a time of busy mid-term exams. On the 18th, Taiwan SPCA held another seminar with Animal Disease Control Center Of Changhua at the Xizhou Gardens. The turn out was a success, with people coming up all the way from Tainan to participate. After the seminar, a veterinarian from the animal disease control center gave us
a tour of the new shelter site beside Xizhou Gardens. The construction project of building a new animal shelter was strongly opposed by two city councilors last year and therefore construction was shut down temporarily and has not restarted since. The councilors argued that a shelter would pollute the area and make the area unsafe and dirty. Even the councilors’ protest banner still hangs on the iron door. The councilors’ arguments are not justi ed and will create a public stigma towards public animal shelters. The location of the new animal shelter is located near a park, which can attract more people to visit the shelter and increase adoption rates. The new shelter will also have a facility for animal welfare education and an exercise/play area for the animals, which are all very bene cial for the shelter animals. The Taiwan SPCA supports plans for the new shelter and will continue to ght for its construction.
On the 27th of April, Taiwan SPCA held a lecture at Changhua Normal University, where members of the Ncue Won Won Club participated enthusiastically. We shared case studies from our animal cruelty investigations and talked about the nation-wide shelter research we conducted. We stressed the importance of stray animal management and pet ownership responsibility. We also encouraged students to join the animal protection movement and help speak up for animals.
Taiwan SPCA believes that animal welfare education is extremely important, therefore, we give talks to students in kindergarten, primary school, junior high school, university and student clubs. To invite the Taiwan SPCA to speak at your school, please contact: Sophia.chiu@spca.org.tw 02-2738-2130.
