The Dangers of Grace
For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to
death without mercy on the testimony of two or three
witnesses. Just think how much worse the punishment will
be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and
have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy,
as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and
disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.
(Hebrews 10:26-29, NLT).
Missing the Point
I presume that no one reading this scripture would
presumptuously take grace as one beautiful, consequence-
free package that God has lovingly provided to His
children. That would presuppose that whatever one does as
a believer the grace of God covers up and makes up for it,
whether the misdeed is deliberate or unintentional. That
many people in our churches are in this state of mindset is
not hard to see. But a careful and objective study of the
Scriptures makes such beliefs unwarranted.
A balance must also be struck that where there is genuine
repentance of any shortcoming the grace of God is available
to restore and empower the truly repentant.
Our lead text, amongst others in the Bible, shows that a
deliberate practice of sin after we have received the salvation
and Lordship of Jesus is not covered by the finished work of
Jesus on the cross. See the way The Living Bible puts
Hebrews 10:26,
