Ms Ntombekaya Ngcukana Control Works Inspector
Ntombekaya, also called Ntombe, is one of ve and only one of two female Control Works Inspectors in the Department. She has been with the Department since May 2016, has close to 16 years’ experience in the construction industry and joined the Department as a quality assessor. Her work entails visiting projects to inspect quality, identifying quality challenges, liaising with district works inspectors to address challenges, for both projects which are under construction and completed projects.
She has vast experience in the private sector doing quality assurance on works under construction and at practical completion stage. Drawing of plans, submitting them to the municipality, doing energy ef ciency calculations, as well as conducting energy ef ciency training, are just some of the many skills that this talented individual has.
As Control Works Inspector for the Amatole East and Chris Hani West regions Ntombe manages disaster projects and works closely with implementing agents to ensure that projects are completed to the prescribed quality standards.
She also monitors maintenance projects implemented by the DoE and with the support of District Works Inspectors, monitors the work of contractors by assessing value for money and doing on-site veri cations to ensure that projects are built according to speci cations and the required quality standards. She visits the districts regularly to solve problems and challenges and updates project progress on the EFMS.
According to Ntombe, one of the secrets to her success is her strong belief in open, honest and transparent communication. She has a good working relationship with her peers and subordinates and readily shares information to empower her team to make informed decisions. This recipe clearly works for Ntombe whose motto in life is “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
When asked about how she copes as a woman in a male-dominated industry, Ntombe says “being knowledgeable about your work, your leadership skills and how you carry yourself as a woman, instills credibility and trust.”
