• Am I required to join the National Health Insurance System (NHI)? If so,
how do I join?
As of January 1, 2013, all students are required to join the National Health
Insurance System after six months of residence in Taiwan. Some schools
provide students with enrollment services. You will need your passport, ARC,
and two headshot photos in order to apply. Please go to the National Health
Insurance website for more detailed information: http://www.nhi.gov.tw/

• What is the consequence of not being covered by the NHI?
In case of a serious illness or accident, you will have to pay for all medical
expenses at relatively high rates.
• What other insurance plans am I required to join?
You are required to join the Student Accident Insurance plan throughout your
period of study in Taiwan. Most schools provide students with enrollment
services. The insurance fee is approximately NT$200-300 per semester.
MOFA provides its scholarship recipients a premium Accident Insurance plan
and covers the payment. The coverage will be automatically terminated
when you are no longer a MOFA scholarship recipient. Please contact school
administration for related information.
• How much does it cost to see a doctor?
Unless you are in a serious or emergency situation, it is recommended that
you first go to a clinic, with your health insurance card, to see a doctor. The
registration fee at clinics is about NT$150-200. If you need more extensive
care than a clinic can provide, you can go to a city or regional hospital. The
registration fee is about NT$400-500.
