Reference the four main parenting styles on the slide:
Child development experts have found that the authoritative parent is the
most successful in raising children who are both strong in school and
emotionally stable.
Most parents don’t fall into one single type. We are often a combination of
several styles. The trick is to be flexible enough to make adjustments to your
primary type by using some of the best practices of other types.
Authoritarian – Strict, rule-based parenting.
The challenge: Authoritative parents generally expect rules to be obeyed, but
don’t explain why. Strict rules can be good, but some flexibility is needed,
especially as kids get older and want to be more independence. Pushing the
rules can cause conflict, or kids can become secretive, knowing they will get
in serious trouble if they break the rules.
Kids of authoritarians can learn not to talk back, push boundaries, or think for
themselves.
