No. 3 – Class Skills Inventory

Overview/Goals:
This exercise will help you better understand why you’re taking the classes you’re taking and
how the sometimes “hidden” skills you may learn in your classes can help you develop a
better portfolio.

1. From your current course list, brainstorm a minimum of six skills you have learned, or are
learning, in each of your classes. Think through the class projects you have done, tests you
have taken, classroom discussions you have participated in or reading assignments that
may have been assigned. Keep in mind we are focusing on skills you have, not necessarily
the knowledge you gained in a subject. What can you do with that knowledge once you
have it? How will it help you in the future?

2. In the following table, describe how each skill you have learned will help you in your
career field.
Once you have completed this section, take the time to map these back to
Exercise No. 1 Your College Prep Portfolio Planner and be sure to include how
you are going to “prove” you have these skills!
Example:
You have chosen to go into Interior Design and are currently taking a World History course.
What skills will you gain by taking a history course will be useful to you in your career? How
will you put those skills to use on a job?
