No. 4 – Soft Skills Inventory
Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Overview/Goals:
This exercise will help you explore your soft skills, sometimes referred to as interpersonal
skills. Soft skills are those skills you use when dealing with emotional issues such as feelings,
values, appreciation, motivations, and attitudes. Soft skills also deal with areas that are not
easily observed such as communication, teamwork, and customer interaction. Soft skills are
often categorized as personality traits or people skills.
It can be challenging to prove your soft skills. One good way is to prove you possess
observable skills that directly relate to the soft skill you want to prove. This exercise will help
you prove your soft skills and allow you to determine what methods of proof you can use.

1. Begin by listing a soft skill you would like to prove you have next to the Soft Skill Area
above each table. In the table below each Soft Skill Area, list a minimum of three
Observable Skills that will help you prove you can perform the soft skill. Be sure each
observable skill you list is directly related to the skill area you are trying to prove.
2. Next, identify how you can prove each observable skill by filling in a work sample under
the Method of Proof column as shown in the example on the following page.
Once you have completed this exercise, take the time to map these skills back to
Exercise No. 1 Your College Prep Portfolio Planner and be sure to include how
you are going to “prove” you have these skills!
