Reconnaissance peaked interest in shadows - it ’warmed up’ the group. There was a growing awareness of
subtleties - of uncertainty about the border between one thing and another and the ability to hold two ‘opposing’
observations in the mind at the same time.
The comment “The shadow is not the thing” reminded us of Bateson’s observation that the ‘map is not the
territory.’
