CHOOSING YOUR CAREER/SKILL
At one point or the other in every young girl's life, there comes a me when
she needs to make a choice on what she wants to be in life, in the area of her
career/skill choice. In the years past, ladies were known to occupy certain
profession tagged feminine which offered the women low earnings than
their male counterparts. Moreover, these days, women have been seen to
occupy notable posi ons in the society as well as good skills to back it up.
However, these days, gender related jobs have li le or no effects on career
choices in order to be fulfilled in life. The following steps will guide you in
making a good choice of career:
1. ASSESS YOURSELF: The career or skill you seek should be able to
provide you with the lifestyle you desire. You have to study
yourself, your values, interests, likes and skills in connec on with

your personality traits. You need to find out your real self, what Voca onal
you are cut for, so you can know the career/skill to choose.
2. LOOK FOR BREADTH IN YOUR CAREER/SKILL CHOICE: Instead of
trying to narrow down your op ons, it can be helpful to keep open as many op ons as possible
within your chosen trade, skill, profession or field of exper se, that way, you will gain flexibility. For
instance, if you want to be a fashion designer or an architect, you can also consider a path in
drawing and photography so you can draw and photograph your designs.
3. MAKE YOUR CHOICE BASED ON YOUR STRENGTHS: A life me, spent on working in an area where
you do not get to rely on your strengths most of the me will cause you a great deal of stress and
disharmony and can prevent growth and peace within your career/skill. You should assess your
strength to know where you fit in.
4. VOLUNTEER IN YOUR DESIRED CAREER/SKILL: There is no be er way to know whether or not it is
the right career/skill for you than to just pitch in and get your hands on the job. The drive behind
volunteering is your mo va on for that career and also the experience gained within the period as
well as the networking contacts built up during that stage are priceless.
5. CONDUCT INFORMATIVE INTERVIEWS: Talk to people who work in your desired field, ask ques ons
and get more in-depth informa on about your career/skill choice.
6. LISTEN TO COUNSEL, BUT MAKE THE ULTIMATE DECISION: Parents, teachers, career counsellors
tend to mean well but they are not you. You know best what works for you and what you derive
passion from. Your choice of skill is what you should enjoy and not what you are forced into, despite
the fact that it earns you money. The key factor for choosing a career/skill is having passion and
fulfilment with your choice, aligning it with your area of interest as well as your strengths.
As a girl, you have plans of having your own family in the future, so it is advisable to choose a
career/skill that will strike a balance between your job, personal life and family, so that none of
them will suffer.
Being passionate about what you do for a living helps to breed excellence and brings out the
extraordinary skills in you.
Your career is the main avenue to showcase your talent, meet people's need, earn money as well as
have joy, happiness and fulfilment. Choose wisely!
