CHARACTER COUNTS
YEARBOOK THEME EXPLAINED
Character is defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Character is therefore
evident in how a person's habits, motives and thoughts relate to morality particularly as it tells on integrity
and how one relates with other people. It is often said that “character is the real you”, which means that
character displays how a person acts, thinks and feels; it is the pattern a person demonstrates.
In 1992, the Jospehson Institute of Ethics hosted a group of youth leaders, educators and character
education scholars in Aspen Colorado where they concluded on a Declaration that there are Six Pillars of
Character, which are the core ethical
values of Character.
The Six Pillars of Character
At Blooms Academy, we introduced the
Six Pillars of Character in line with our
Vision, which is to:
“Provide a well-rounded education that
prepares the child to be a useful and
productive member of the society”
We aim to prepare children with sterling
character traits, endued with the fear of
God who will function effectively as
global leaders in their generation.
Ø Responsibility teaches children to: be accountable, take charge of their actions, do what they
are supposed to do at the right time, be at the right place at the right time, turn in their work
in ideal conditions, be in school early, have self-control, be disciplined, and think before they
act -considering the consequence and setting good examples for others.
Ø Trustworthiness teaches children to: keep to their words, be bold enough to do the right thing,
build a good reputation and be loyal and keep their promises. It also teaches them not to cheat
or steal and to always say the truth.
Ø Respect teaches children to: treat others with respect, always apply the golden rule, use the 5
magic words; please, excuse me, sorry, thank you and pardon me. It also teaches children not
to use swear words, use good manners not bad language, consider other people's feelings, to be
tolerant, respect elders, not to fight and not to bully.
Ø Fairness teaches children to: treat people fairly, take turns, share with others, be open-
minded, consider others and avoid blaming others hastily. It also teaches us not to take
advantage of people, listen before talking and to always follow the rules.
Ø Caring teaches children to help the needy, forgive and seek to be
forgiven, be kind, be compassionate and show they care, to always
express gratitude and to be sympathetic.
Ø Citizenship teaches children to be good citizens, learn about their
country, exercise their civic duties, be cooperative, obey laws, obey
traffic lights, respect authority, respect rights of others, respect property
of others and to be active in the community. ALABI, Ifeoluwa
