PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE 2020
A. PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
Tenses are verb forms which English speakers use to talk in the past,
present and future in their language. The past is used to describe things that
have already happened (e.g., earlier in the day, yesterday, last week). The
present tense is used to describe things that are happening right now, or
things that are continuous. The future tense describes things that have yet
to happen (e.g., later, tomorrow, next week).
There are 16 tenses that must be learned in English. Understanding tenses
is very useful for determining what verb that can be used at certain times.
This book is focusing on the discussion of Present Continuous Tense.
B. DEFINITION OF PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
The present continuous (also called present progressive) is a verb tense
which is used to show that an ongoing action is happening now, either at
the moment of speech or now in a larger sense. The present continuous can
also be used to show that an action is going to take place in the near future.
C. THE USE OF PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
1. NOW
Use the present continuous with normal verbs to express the idea
that something is happening now, at this very moment. It can also
be used to show that something is not happening now.
FOR INSTANCE:
• You are learning English now.
• Are you sleeping?
• I am not standing.
