Learning Task
To get you started, complete this online teaching goals inventory
(courtesy of the University of Iowa).
A Personal teaching philosophy is just that personal. There is no right or wrong way
to approach it.
Reading Task
We like this article on writing your PTP from the University of Iowa. It
divides the PTP into four questions.
Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement
Learning Task
In this task, you need to create your own PTP. If you have one, go
and find it, dust it off and reflect on the validity of the beliefs you
expressed. Remember to ask yourself these questions:
(adapted from <https://owlcation.com/academia/Philosophy-of-
Teaching-Statement-Template-and-Samples>)
• Why is teaching relevant to me?
• Why do I want to teach?
• What do I believe about how people learn?
• What do I think effective teaching is? How will I teach
effectively? How will I measure my efficacy?
• How can I apply principles of learning and educational theory to
my teaching?
• How do I assess student learning?
• How do I assess my effectiveness as a teacher?
