UNDERSERVED
AREA DESIGNATION
The United States Federal Government has of cially designated the MarchLife California service area as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). In 2008, Riverside County had 36 primary care physicians and 62 specialists per 100,000 residents versus a statewide average of 59 and 115, respectively, causing nearly half of inpatients to leave the service area (leakage) for healthcare, as service providers are fragmented throughout the region. [4]
There are no private hospital rooms in the 10-mile service area.
2.6 million people now live within 20 miles of MarchLife California. [4]
The 10-mile service area is 44% underserved with only 463 beds. The 20-mile service area is 38% underserved with only 1,886 beds. Riverside County desperately needs adequate healthcare services to support its tremendous growth. [5]
MUA: Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) are areas in which residents have a shortage of personal health services. This is designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration HRSA.
