The Graphic Design students are off to a great start learning to be creative with how words
appear. One of their first projects was to create a word cloud, which features one large word
surrounded by other words that describe it. Abi Bergethon created a beautiful design for the

word “family,” Collier Mesic captured the many ideas that go with “puzzle,” and Madelyn
Tubbs captured the sensations of a day by the shore with her “beach” design. Expectations
are high for what else these students, and the others in the class, will produce by the end of
          the year.

Art I students start their study with one-point perspective
drawing. Students practiced drawing cubes, checkerboards,
rooms and hallways all in one-point perspective. Once stu-
dents gained sufficient practice they were sent into the
school hallways to draw from actual observation. After per-
spective, the concept of proportions was introduced, and

students were taught techniques for measuring the objects
they see. With this new concept of proportions, students
also studied value and contrast while drawing a pre-set still
life. Spotlights were used so that there could be a focus on
         shadows and highlights.
