these things only happen elsewhere." We convince our-
selves that America is an island fortress that sits like a
queen of the globe, pretty, safe, and comfortable.
She has lived in luxury and pleasure—match it
now with torments and with sorrows. She boasts,
"I am queen upon my throne. I am no helpless
widow. I will not experience sorrow."
(Revelation 18:7 LB)
This nation can't even conceive itself being a second-
rate world power, much less a nation broken and
wounded by divine judgment. It is one thing to be pa-
triotic and loyal to our country. It is quite something
else to shut our eyes to what has become of us.
It all boils down to three simple American delusions:
1. "End-of-the-world doomsday preachers are fanat-
ical freaks."
2. "We've always come through every crisis and al-
ways will."
3. "America is too strong and resilient, and we are a
nation of destiny."
This will be their line of argument: "So Jesus
promised to come back, did he? Then where is he?
He'll never come! Why, as far back as anyone can
remember everything has remained exactly as it
was since the first day of creation."
(2 Peter 3:4 LB)
