Community Accessible Rehabilitation recently hosted a 2-day workshop on Manual Edema Mobilization (MEM) for Sub-Acute Hand / Arm Edema. This practical workshop was presented by Vivian Dim, CHT and Certified Lymphedema and Complete Decongestive Therapist, and who has a Clinical Masters in Wound Care. She discussed the rationale and evidence-base for MEM, provided case study presentations, and used both lecture and hands-on labs to teach the 5 key components of the method. In addition she provided instruction in compression and bandaging, induration softening devices and the use of kinesiology taping in the treatment of edema. In the words of one participant, “we all learned a lot, and I think it will change our practice, and ultimately improve our patient outcomes and timeframes.”

The CSHT-BC group met last month in Vancouver to discuss thumb CMC Arthroplasties. Dr. Photis Loizides, a local plastic surgeon, gave an excellent presentation, which created interesting discussion. We are looking forward to meeting again in the Spring.
The BC Hand Society Annual meeting will be in Whistler June 9th and 10th. The guest speaker is Dr. Peter Stern from the University of Cincinnati. The CSHT-BC hand therapists will be meeting as a breakout group, to have a jamming session on Relative Motion Splinting.

The hand therapists in Saskatoon are getting together monthly for educational purposes. We are presently reviewing wrist anatomy, wrist evaluation and reading x-rays. We are doing our best to stay warm this winter with our constantly fluctuating temperatures. We are waiting patiently for spring and this will also mean the CSHT annual conference will be coming up soon. Therapists from Saskatoon will be attending as we know it is an excellent educational opportunity and is a great value for our money.
