Sylvia Mendez was born in
Santa Ana, California in
1936, the daughter of Mexican
and Puerto Rican immigrants.
Sylvia’s parents wanted their
children to have the best
education possible, so they
enrolled them in the 17th
Street Elementary School in
Westminster.
