The Mendez family decided to fight for the


       right for Sylvia to attend the 17th Street


       Elementary, so they gathered many people


       together in the Mexican community in



       Westminster to challenge the city.







                                                                      Did you know?


                                                                      In the 1940’s, there were separate schools for
                                                                      different races of people. In Sylvia’s case, there
                                                                      was one school for Whites, and one for Hispanics.
                                                                      Sylvia’s family wanted her to attend the school
                                                                      that was only for Whites at the time.
