           COMMANDER’S REPORT
Cdr. Carol Johnson, AP
It is hard to believe that we are into a new year. The year 2020 has surely been the year that was! Who would have ever believed that in our modern time we would live through a global pandemic that literally shut down the world? However, we made it through it and now are hoping for all good things in 2021. In years to come, I am thinking that we’ll reach into an old coat pocket and come up with a mask and memories of 2020, some good and some not so good.
With the Covid-19 vaccine now available and being given to American citizens in the order of health needs starting with essential workers, then the elderly, and slowly getting to each and every citizen, we can see the finish line ahead. Ultimately, we will again be meeting and hugging our loved ones, family members, and of course friends. Lastly, Captree meetings will again be live and in person. In the end, we all will be thankful that we survived this past year.
However, we still have some months ahead of us before things return to normal, but as we have done this past year, events, meetings and phone calls to loved ones will continue virtually. Until we get the word from the District and the Moose Lodge that we can again meet in person, Captree will continue to hold its Executive Committee Meeting and General Membership Meeting via Zoom.
On December 22, 2020, a meeting was conducted by USPS Chief Commander Mary Paige Abbott with the Board of Directors and a decision was made to hold the USPS Annual Meeting virtually beginning February 15, 2021 instead of an in- person meeting in Ponte Vedre, Florida as originally planned. The meeting will consist of seminars, workshops, guest speakers and socials over a two-week period of time. Once the itinerary is posted, we will pass the information on so that you are able to join virtually if you have the interest.
Regarding new technologies, the America’s Boating Club Mobile App has been launched and is ready to be downloaded by its members. This app will be a single source for all boaters’ needs, including nautical reference information, maintenance records, float plans, weather, radar, tides and currents, and much more. The app is FREE and can be downloaded to your phone and/or tablet. If you encounter trouble downloading the app, go to the americasboatingclub.org for a PowerPoint tutorial.
With virtual meetings still the safest way to be together, District 3 will be following National’s lead and will hold the previously postponed Fall Educational Conference on January 15, 2021. Also, with the anticipation that meetings cannot be held in person, the Spring conference is scheduled for March 12-13, 2021, once again virtually. Information and details on how to attend will be distributed prior to the date of each conference.
One last note on events – Captree’s Summer 2021 Cruise is in the making. See page 10 of this LOG. Contact Frank Verderber if you are interested.
It is my sincerest wish that the New Year be Happy, Healthy and Get-Together Friendly!
Carol
