                          Danger in Haifa

E Professor Itamar Grotto, head of Israel’s medical services, gave an
official stamp today to the troubling morbidity rate in the Haifa bay area.
The increasing discussion regarding the air pollution and its effects on
residents made many of them go into the city union website, and check
what the pollution level is in their place of residence every day. But in
Kiryat Haim a white rectangle appears on the screen, which means missing
data, and as for the Carmel ridge settlements near Haifa, (they) don’t
appear on the union map at all. These, by the way, are two of the regions
where the highest morbidity rates in the Haifa bay area were found. Next
month the first year out of five of the largest pollution and morbidity study
ever done in the Haifa bay area will come to an end. Then, the study will
be published as well. Ninety percent of the study’s budget for this year was
funded by the Electric Company and the ORL group. The remaining three
million NIS funding for the study, will be funded by government
ministries instead of private or polluting companies, which will help the
Haifa municipality realize its threat of shutting down polluting plants when
the study is published, already next month.
