Naruto’s Selfie
“Who is rich? He who is happy with his lot,” is said about Naruto the
monkey, who travels these days in the forests of Indonesia, a little bit
richer than his monkey brothers, and all because of a complicated legal
drama that ended this morning. The story begins a decade ago, when the
photographer David Slater set his camera in the thick Indonesian jungles in
an attempt to capture photographs of animals. But Naruto had other plans.
The rude monkey approached the camera that Slater set up, pressed the
photo button and created the first animal selfie. Overnight, Naruto’s selfie
went viral; even on Wikipedia they uploaded an entry about the
photogenic monkey. But then Slater the photographer demanded that the
website remove the picture and pay him royalties, claiming that the picture
was his, which led to a long and complex legal battle. In the end, after
countless legal argumentations, the sides declared today that they have
reached a compromise. Though the rights for the photograph will remain
in the hands of Slater, Naruto has the right to twenty five percent of the
profits. Naruto, whose verdict did not disturb his daily routine even for a
moment, doesn’t know this, but many in the world see him as a
groundbreaker for other animals.
