         Dialogues – Unit 5

Daniel: Ok, so I have a current account… can I also open a savings plan?
Teller: Yeah, sure. (A telephone ring is heard). Just a minute, please.
Teller: Hello?
Mr. Glik: (angrily) Hello?! This is Moshe Glik. I don’t understand what is

going on in this bank! The bank is taking (away) money from
            me!
Teller: The bank is taking (away) money from you? Are you sure?
Mr. Glik: Yes, Yesterday I had 7,000 shekels credit (in my account), and
today I only have 3,000 shekels.
Teller: Mr. Glik, today is February 15th. Every month, on the 15th [of
the month], you pay (your) phone bill, gas bill, rent and visa bill.
That is 4,000 shekels in total.
Mr. Glik: Oh… So the bank isn’t taking money (away) from me?
Teller: No, what are you talking about?
Mr. Glik: You know what? Maybe now you’re ok, but I’ve been in the
bank for 35 years already, and usually you’re not acceptable [ok]
at all! I want to move banks! Today! Right now! This instant!!!!!
Teller: Just a minute, Mr. Glik. The manager will speak with you, all
            right?
Teller: Excuse me, Daniel.
Daniel: I don’t understand. Don’t people know what they pay for?
Teller: People pay many bills, and sometimes they do not remember.
Daniel: But it’s important to remember!
Teller: True, but… What can (you) do? Ok. I’m opening a current
account and a savings plan for you.
Daniel: Great. You know, I learned a lot about banks in Israel today.
learned that in an Israeli bank (you) need to stand in line for a
long time. I learned that a lot of Israelis have an overdraft in the
bank, and this isn’t good. I learned that it’s not good to write
checks when you don’t have money in (your) account. I learned
that I need to remember what I pay for. I learned that Israelis
don’t have patience for tellers. And most important…
Teller: What?
Daniel: I learned that everyone says: “I want to move banks”, but stay

in the bank for another 20 years.
