Yitzhak Navon 1921-2015

Yitzhak Navon, the fifth President of the state of Israel, was born in Jerusalem to one of the most
longstanding families in the city, dating back to the seventeenth century. He studied Arabic
literature, Islamic culture and education. In the sixties, when he worked at the Ministry of Culture
and Education, (he) launched a campaign to teach adult new immigrants Hebrew. He was the first
president who went to visit Anwar Sadat’s Egypt. Yitzhak Navon wasn’t just a politician, he was an
educated man, who wrote pieces talking about the Jews of Spain. Yitzhak Navon passed away at the
age of ninety four.
