Many years ago a man and his wife lived in Bagdad. They were not
happy because they didn’t have a son. On Seder night they sat around
the table and read the Haggadah. When they read “and tell your son…”,
they were sad. Suddenly, they heard a knock on the door. At the door
stood an old man who asked to sit with them. They welcomed him
gladly. After the Seder, the guest said: “I ask the Lord bless his name,
to come to you next Pesach as well, and your table will be without
order [Seder]”. They were surprised at the guest’s behavior, but didn’t
say anything. Many days had passed, and they forgot about the guest.
Three months before the next Pesach, they had a son. On Seder night
they sat around the table, read the Haggadah, and very gladly told the
story of the exodus from Egypt. But the baby pulled the tablecloth
and made a mess on the table. The parents looked with forgiveness
and love at the boy, whom they prayed for all these years. When they
got to “and tell your son” they smiled, happy. Suddenly, they heard a
knock on the door, and at the door stood the old man from last year.
They were very happy to see him, and said they were sorry for
thinking he was ungrateful. The guest just smiled and said: “you will
get to raise him according to the spirit of the Torah, to Chuppa, and
good deeds”, and disappeared. Only then did they realize that the
guest was prophet Eliyahu.
