This question has occupied the minds of many recently.
Police sources tell us that it is wrong to blame the police
for the difficult situation on the roads on the one hand,
while handing out lenient sentences to those criminals
who are apprehended on the other.
"If we want the practice of drunk driving to stop and be
rooted out,
we must make use of [be aided by] the most severe and
threatening means the law places at our disposal", the
police source said.
Meanwhile the police is preparing for summer vacation,
which is full of teens devoid of a structured daily
program,
and is attempting to reach out to all 11th and 12th
graders in Israel and hold a workshop dealing with road
safety.
A police spokesman said that despite the many financial
difficulties which have accumulated along the way,
the police is expected to succeed in reaching every
school in the country before the summer holidays. For
this purpose the police is being aided by many
volunteers, who have been trained to direct these special
workshops.
