Valley of the Son of Hinnom

In the time of the First Temple the Valley of the Son of Hinnom was a
place of worship for deities.
In the worship (they) would sacrifice children to the deities, and burn
them alive. Because of this, the name ‘Ben Hinom Valley’ turned from a
geographical concept into the religious concept - ‘hell’.
This is how Chazal describe the place:
“There are two palms in the valley of Hinnom, between which there
ascends smoke … and it is the entrance to Gehenna.”
(Babylonian Talmud, Sukkah tractate, 32b)
