The Last Man from Treblinka
Shmuel Villenberg was one of the thirty seven Jews who managed to
escape from the Treblinka extermination camp. He passed away last week,
aged ninety three. Shmuel was born in Poland and when the war began he
volunteered for the Polish army. In nineteen forty two Shmuel was sent to
Treblinka, from which he managed to escape. In nineteen fifty he made
Aliyah to Israel. After he retired he started painting and sculpting. It was
important to him that people remember the holocaust, and along with his
wife and daughter wanted to establish a visitor center in Treblinka, a
center that he’ll never get to see.
