An Expensive Smart Notebook
“A pencil box, notebooks, markers, smart notebooks…” – “Smart
notebooks?” – “Yes.” –“Why is it called a smart notebook?” – “They teach
really well.” This is the smart notebook. There’s barely a school that
doesn’t ask to buy it as part of the required equipment for the first grade.
Shaked and Rotem were each asked to buy ten of these. The problem with
these notebooks is that they’re not cheap; five NIS each, and there’s only
one manufacturer that makes them, after patenting them. The smart
notebook has fifteen pages in total, and it helps kids write letters or
numbers in a uniform manner and correct spaces. It makes it easier for
students, but it isn’t clear why it became a mandatory product in every
(school) bag. This sum is of course added to many hundreds of NIS
parents are required to spend on each child for school equipment, optional
payments, mandatory payments, additional curriculums, private tutoring…
education is expensive anyway. The Ministry of Education says in
response that they haven’t defined purchasing the smart notebook (as part
of) the guidelines. For acquiring the reading and writing skills there are
other ways and means which don’t necessarily include the smart notebook.
