I can’t believe the year is almost coming to an end. Being part of the executive team 2 years in a row may seem very long for some people, but it went SO fast for me. Al- most every week was jam-packed with some sort of col- lege event; throughout the year there were many instanc- es when I had to prioritize EXEC work over my own time, but it was definitely worth it! I’m that type of person who loves being thanked, so every time I hear positive feed- back it makes me think “Gee, I’m glad that I put that ef- fort into it”. I want to thank all the college members, be- cause without you guys I wouldn’t have been able to expe- rience this kind of feeling.
My first task as a VP was designing the college T-shirt. As you may know I LOVE designing, so this job was more like a treat for me. I wanted to design something that could be worn outside of the college too, so I tried to keep every- thing simple. Each letter is slightly different-sized, but they all fit inside the circular outline to make up the logo. This was meant to symbolize all the different people, but they all form unity in the college. I’m quite proud of the design and I hope everyone liked it.
My second task was organizing the trip to St. Clair’s beach. Fortunately, we were able to in- corporate the beach trip into O week, so there was a great turn out! The I still remember ring- ing up the St. Clair’s fish’n’chip shop asking for 50 scoops of chips, and the shop owner would- n’t believe me. I found it funny, when he initially had a questioning tone in his voice but be- came happier as I explained myself; “Okay, la. I’ll see you soon my boi!”
My final task was organizing the Mystery Bus Trip. As embarrassing as this is to say, I’ve nev- er really stepped out of the campus zone even though I’ve been living in Dunedin for a while now. Thanks to the help of the locals, I narrowed the locations down to Baldwin Street, Lar- nach Castle and Tunnel Beach. It was absolutely amazing being able to go to the castle and beach this year; it was never done in the previous years. Even though, the weather wasn’t the best, the views definitely made up for it. It was the most difficult and most time-consuming job. Not just me, but many of the EXEC members had to give up their time for this and I’m very thankful for it. At the end of the trip, when one of the members said, “Thanks for organ- izing such an amazing trip for us, Souhei.” I almost cried. This sense of accomplishment is a perk of this job.
People ask me why I give up so much time and effort on something you are not paid for, but I have no regrets in becoming a VP. This is definitely one of the best things that happened to me, as it developed my confidence, sense of responsibility and time management. It has been such an honour to serve as the VP this year.
Lastly, I just want to thank you guys so much for being such a kind and lovely bunch. You guys have made our job extremely entertaining and easy. I hope the best for whatever you are studying next year and please say Hi to me whenever you see me!
