food rep
2018
I would just like to start off by saying I am so grateful to have been your food rep this year, and I hope that I was able to meet everyone’s expectations. To be completely honest, signing for food rep was a very last-minute decision, but one that I definitely don’t regret. My first year was very quiet, and I wasn’t involved in the college like I was this year. However, one thing that I instantly learnt off the bat, was that being involved makes the fun of living in a hall that much greater.
My role as the food rep incorporated a few major and minor roles. One of the more obvious major roles was the canteen. Managing the canteen was admittedly frustrating at times, like when stock would run out too quick and I didn’t have a way to efficiently restock, or towards the start of the year when food was going missing. But it was actually such a pleasure to be able to provide for people when they were hungry, or just needed some distraction from exams.
There was also running the food committee and interacting with the kitchen staff. I never realised in my first year just how nice the kitchen staff were, but this year really gave me a new perspective. I really enjoyed being more open with them and having that direct communication for talking about feedback on the menu, or organising events like themed dinners and food related matters in the exec. I am extremely thankful to the kitchen staff for being so willing to agree to certain ideas, like the Chinese New Year themed dinner at the start of the year.
The food eating competitions were by far my favourite responsibilities as food rep. First was the spicy noodle eating competition that was held in semester 1. I loved the level of participation, how energised the audience was, and the intensity of the competition. The battle between Jun and Wanli will always be one of the key memories I have of this year. The second food eating competition which involved pizza and ice cream was just as enjoyable to watch. Jun & Liam against Wanli & Richard was again a highlight of the evening, as well as when Katie & Nikki managed to take 3rd place by beating out both Likhit & Rowan, and Krishan & Yatin.
Of course, food rep is just part of a greater group of college executive members who all worked so hard this year, and have made sure they have left their mark on the college. I just want to thank everyone for not only helping me achieve my goals as an exec member, but also for making me feel welcome in such a great group of people.
Thank you all for making 2018 such an amazing year. – Seonwoo Nam
